Introducing students to celebrated American authors, American Literature uniquely links the authors' lives and beliefs, as revealed in their writings, with the corresponding literary periods.  In their chronological study of the literary periods, students encounter: Neo-classicism, American Romanticism, Realism, Naturalism, and Modernism.  As students explore these eras of literature, they consider the relevant historical issues associated with each period such as Darwinism, liberalism, and humanism. Studying the factors influencing the authors and their works, students apply advanced literary analysis as they examine the techniques authors use to produce specific
meaning in their writings. Through Socratic discussion, students learn to appreciate the aesthetic attributes of each author’s work while simultaneously evaluating each work’s moral tones and inherent themes from the Christian worldview.

In addition to exposing students to great literature, this course refines students’ research and analytic writing skills, teaches them how to decipher and respond to a variety of writing prompts, and offers general test-taking and timed writing strategies for essays like the SAT.

Students in American Literature participate in a private virtual classroom in which IEW® Accomplished Instructor, Ericka McClelland guides them through their weekly assignments with the intent of equipping them to be gracious ambassadors for Christ who engage our culture as complex thinkers, confident communicators, and collaborative workers.
