Designed with an investigative motif, Medieval History-Based Language Arts sets students on a quest of learning language arts while focusing on medieval history! Meandering through medieval Europe, students track vexing vocabulary, crack critique codes, and demystify puzzling punctuation! Live and interactive, this class features all nine units of IEW’s Structure and Style™ methodology paired with medieval history source texts. Examining the rise of the Catholic Church, the coronation of monarchs, and the establishment of feudalism, students learn to write and write to learn medieval history’s role in molding western civilization!
Linked to their learning about the Middle Ages, students encounter a diverse assortment of short stories, poems, and novels complimenting trends and topics of medieval history. Each literary selection challenges students to improve their moral imaginations and enhance their enjoyment of great and good literature. From a young boy who draws Excalibur from the stone in The Story of King Arthur and His Knights to Asta’s son who discovers his true identity in Crispin: The Cross of Lead, students learn to celebrate beauty, identify virtues, and discern consequences.
Students in Medieval History-Based Language Arts participate in a private virtual classroom in which IEW® Accomplished Instructor, Ericka McClelland, guides them through their weekly language lab investigations. After class, students download their weekly 4-day assignment schedule and customized checklists required to complete the week’s assignments. Once completed, students upload their work to their Google docs folder shared with Mrs. McClelland. Students receive weekly personalized feedback on each completed assignment. Equipped to approach language arts confidently and the art of language competently, students immerse themselves in the misery and merriment of the Middle Ages.
