Language Investigations I, under the guidance of the infamous Inspector Sherlock Hemlock, a parody of Sherlock Holmes, sets students on the trail of tracking vexing vocabulary, cracking critique codes, and demystify puzzling punctuation! Students encounter high-interest source texts and contextualized vocabulary, grammar and editing instruction during each class investigation. Live and interactive, this class features all nine writing units of the award-winning Structure and Style™ methodology of the Institute for Excellence in Writing®. Because the structure and style techniques are taught incrementally and fully integrated with the literature assignments, students are afforded plenty of practice and opportunity to build their written and oral language skills. Students progress from the basics of creating their own outlines to the complexities of crafting their own responses to literature.
Testing their wits and giving their powers of deduction a workout, Language Investigations I requires students to solve a series of language arts mysteries involving a suspicious array of genres and authors! Students examine six theme-based literature units (Courage, Nature & Man, Generosity, Our Land, Humility, and Family) to solve the mystery inherent in each. From Rudyard Kipling’s “Rikki-Tikki-Tavi” to James Hurst’s “The Scarlet Ibis,” students learn literary terms and develop critical thinking skills to analyze, interpret, and evaluate what they read based on the truth of the Bible.
Students in Language Investigations I participate in a private virtual classroom in which IEW Accomplished Instructor, Ericka McClelland, guides them through their weekly language investigations. With Inspector Sherlock Hemlock at the helm, students are equipped to approach language arts confidently and practice the art of language competently!
Overview of Topics Covered: Banned Words Review, Dress-Up & Sentence Openers Review, Transitions & Decorations, Triples & Advanced Style, Greek & Latin Word Roots, SAT Vocabulary, Grammar in Context, Punctuation & Usage, and MLA Formatting & Citation, Reading Comprehension Strategies, and Basic Annotation Skills. Writing projects include a biographical sketch, an in-class essay, a letter to the editor, and a literature critique.
