Content & Materials Questions
What is the typical tutorial format?
During each tutorial students participate in three investigative language labs:
The Linguistics Lab
In this lab, students examine the evidence of grammar, vocabulary, and editing to build a case for communicating with clarity.
The Writing Lab
Presented with quality and varied texts, students expose the clues of structure and style to build a case for speaking and writing with facility.
The Literature Lab
By applying a strategic method of questioning, students discover the secrets of how to summarize, evaluate, and engage an author’s ideas to build a case for approaching language with poise and responding with precision.
Each lab investigation introduces the focus of the lab with a media clip, bell-ringer, or short vignette that contains a mystery to be solved. Previous lab concepts are reviewed and new concepts are presented and modeled using prepared slides and an interactive whiteboard. Following the presentation of new materials, students spend time practicing new skills, asking questions, and participating in group activities.
A summary wraps up each class. The summary consists of an interactive quiz or class poll that reviews the materials presented during class.
Language Headquarters ONLINE TUTORIALS contain distinctly Christian content and adopts a Christian world and life view.
We own copies of several of the texts. Could my student use our copy instead of the required edition?
Yes, provided you are willing to have your copy marked and highlighted with your student’s annotations. Also, your student should be adept at locating pages with a copy that is not likely to share the same pagination as the required text edition.
I would like to register two students in the same course. Can they share IEW® materials?
Yes, IEW’s copyright policy allows students within the same family to copy the Student Book for use by other students within the immediate family. Although IEW generously offers this as an option, families may find it more convenient and cost effective to simply purchase an additional copy of the Student Book.
I would like to register students in the same course. Can they share the books and novels?
Given that students are required to annotate their readings, it is recommended that each student has their own copy of the required novels and books. Having their own personal copy of the text will facilitate finding and referring to their annotations during discussions.
Can students use e-readers rather than purchase hard copies of the books and novels?
Yes, but the e-reader must have annotation and pagination features. In addition, to facilitate class interaction and discussion, students must be proficient in using their e-readers.
How much parental involvement is required?
Parents are the primary educators in the student’s coursework and are responsible for keeping their student on track during class. In addition, parents are responsible for overseeing their student’s weekly assignments and proper submission of assignments in a timely manner. In short, parents ought to provide as much help and support as their student requires.
What feedback is offered to students on assignments?
Students receive feedback on all assignments. Completed assignments are reviewed and returned within one week of their submission. Late assignments are not accepted without prior written notice from the parent.
